The Geneva Accords signed on 21 July 1954 divided the former French colony of Indo China into two new nations: North Vietnam and South Vietnam. Almost immediately, the rulers of North Vietnam began a war aimed at re-uniting North and South. The perceived success of the North in subverting the South resulted in military intervention by the US and some of its allies in South East Asia, including Australia, starting in the early 1960s.
