Having tried several times, without very great success, to induce Sloan to write an account of his experiences during those dreadful years that followed 1914, I've decided to make an attempt at it myself, with the help of his "Dream of the Past", a little diary which I discovered among his books and promptly confiscated, and also my own diary, which contains many of the incidents he has told me of at different times. Then perhaps he may be induced to correct my mistakes, which will doubtless be many.
I think his "Dream of the Past" gives the best account of his enlistment:
