Details
Murray, leading A Company, seized the right of a trench after stiff resistance and then consolidated for the expected counter-attacks. The Germans counter-attacked three times. On the last attack Murray gathered together twenty bombers and organised a brilliant charge which drove off the enemy. Throughout the night his company suffered heavy casualties through concentrated shell-fire and on one occasion gave up a short section of ground. Murray rallied his command and saved the situation. He headed bombing parties, led bayonet charges and carried wounded to safety.
